Just thought I'd give you a few
observations on the performances as I saw them...
With the
exception of the young left back, Sam Rents (who played
the whole game), Albion fielded a different team in each
half. They started with CK-R up front alongside Leon,
and the Coca Cola Kid certainly impressed. He got pulled
and pushed around quite a bit without much protection
from the ref, but certainly showed some promise and
scored a cracking opening goal from 12-14 yards, when
Leon picked him out with a neat pass.
Shortly
afterwards he had a thunderous shot from about 25 yards
which cannoned off the crossbar and Leon Knight also
curled in a beauty which also came off "the woodwork".
Young 'keeper John Sullivan let the ball slip from his
grasp on more than once occasion, which was concerning,
and Gary Elphick lining up at centre back looked very
awkward and "rural". Jason Dodd had a steady debut at
right back. Albert Jarrett didn't do his claims for a
starting place any good at all with an erratic
performance on the left wing. Aside from a couple of
dazzling dribbles and effective crosses, he too often
lost possession or failed to control the ball at all.
Chippy
led the first half side with typical gusto and
endeavour.I personally thought Sam Rents did well at
left back, although it would be interesting to see how
he might cope against better opposition.
Our best
player in the 2nd half was young Dean Cox who capped an
energetic left wing display with a delightful chipped
goal from the edge of the penalty area. Jake Robinson,
though, had a poor game on the right wing (later
swapping wings with Cox, but to no avail) and a
miserable night was completed by an horrendous penalty
miss when he blazed high over the bar following a
handball.
It was
the 2nd penalty for Albion, shortly after Chris McPhee
dispatched one having been fouled himself. It was about
all he did in 45 minutes, and McCammon, likewise, did
very little.
Young
centre back Steve May put in a useful performance at the
back alongside Joel Lynch, although Worthing managed to
notch three good goals in this period. One, though, came
direct from a misplaced throw from sub keeper Richard
Martin.
