One of the most
exhilarating Albion performances in recent years seems
too high an accolade to accord Albion's 2-0 Bank Holiday
Monday triumph over Plymouth.
But few of the Withdean
faithful could recall the last time we played with such
high quality passing and movement and Mark McGhee
confessed he'd not seen so many chances created in his
time at the club.
Credit to him for
continuing with the bold, attacking line-up which so
nearly shocked Preston on Saturday.
Jake Robinson fulfilled
all our expectations with a man-of-the-match performance
up front, notching a goal and running the Plymouth
back-line ragged. In this endeavour he was superbly
supported by Leon Knight, who could so easily have
scored a hat-trick.
Running Jake close for
the man-of-the-match accolade was Sebastien Carole who
has given our play an exciting new dimension with his
skill and strength on the ball.
The rejuvenated Albert
Jarrett capped a fine contribution on the left flank
with a dazzling run from the halfway line to the
goal-line before clipping back a cross which was
deflected to Richard Carpenter outside the box. He
smashed an unstoppable shot with the outside of his
right foot into the top right hand corner.
I was desperate for our superiority to claim a third
goal - not the least because I'd got money on us scoring
three! - but it was not to be. I could take issue with
Dean Hammond missing a sitter from Chippy's right wing
cross, but I did earn money from his goal at Derby, so
he's forgiven.
There were excellent
performances throughout the side, Paul McShane was
immense at the back again, alongside the ever-reliable
Guy Butters. Gary Hart was a revelation playing right
back in place of the injured Jason Dodd and Wayne
Henderson looked far more confident with his handling -
and even ventured off his line a few times!
There was even time for
a nice couple of cameo roles: from the Coca Cola Kid,
replacing Jarrett and displaying again some glimpses of
his pre-season promise; and from Dean Cox, making his
league debut as a sub for the exhausted Robinson and
giving Plymouth left-back Rufus Brevett yet more
problems to contend with.
A great afternoon's
entertainment and plenty of signs that we can secure
results in this division by playing good football
ourselves - not just stopping the opposition from
playing.
