Virgo
has talked about his fathers death for the first time publicly since two
burglars broke into his dads house and struck a blow to his head. The
57-year-old was already terminally ill with liver cancer, however after
his death, this lead to heartbroken Virgo having second thoughts about
leaving Brighton. It actually took a family conference to help him make up
his mind.
He said: 'You never recover from the death of
your dad. And when something like this comes along you just wish he was
around to see it.
'My dad was the one who put up all the money
for new boots when I was younger. And it was him who drove all over Sussex
to take me to games and watch me play.
'Because of what happened, I had doubts about
leaving Brighton. However, after talking to family and friends I realised
it was the right decision to go to Celtic.'
Last season, Virgo missed a game to spend time
with his family after the tragic incident, and fans paid their tributes,
with hundreds of messages of support being left on the message board North
Stand Chat.
Due to his knee injury, Virgo will not be
starting with the team in their first few games. Despite passing the
medical, he will be unable to play for at least another three weeks.
McGhee however says the Celtic fans should have no doubt - he will be a
hit at first sight...
McGhee has also talked about the reason he
believes so many of our top players are leaving the club - such as Virgo
and Harding this summer. He told BBC Sport, "What is our argument? 'Come
on, don't go to Celtic or Leeds - stay and play at the Withdean'? It is
not even an argument that I would put to them."
In the interview, McGhee is even talking about
playing Premiership football once we are established at Falmer. He says
"And I can at least say to these boys 'look, give us a couple of years and
we'll pay you properly. Give us a chance to get in the Premiership and if
it doesn't come off then we won't stand in your way'.
"But I can't do that at the moment. It's just
about survival until then."
