Withdean Stadium is finally expanding - contractors have started to undertake the work which will see the total capacity of Withdean increase to almost 9,000.

On Monday morning, contractors finally gave the go-ahead for the seats to be put in. The club had contractors ready to carry out the work, and this has started immediately.

The diagram below makes a start at showing the changes. The first stage of development will take place at the West end of the ground (shown below on the left). Around 900 seats will be setup here for away fans, with new turnstiles and facilities such as toilets and catering. The dressing rooms are also moving to this end of the ground.

The second stage of the development will take place on the East side of the ground (shown on the right below). The current away fans stand will be expanded along with extra seats at the end. This will take the capacity of the East stands to 1,000 - and will now only be used for home supporters.

Martin Perry, Chief Executive, has stated that all work will be finished by January, and earlier is possible. The new away seats should be completed by the end of September - ready to be used around mid-October.

The diagram above should only be used as an example of the new plans to give an idea of the expansion. Further changes that are not shown on our diagram include a new hospitality suite, and a change to the layout of the East stand entrance and exits.

The new seats however could only be used once a third park and ride site was found. The green light to use Carden Avenue was given just a couple of weeks ago. This will have space for a further 200 cars, and will be launched in conjunction with the new seats in mid-October.
