They say that one man doesn't make a team
but today, one young man, Jake Robinson, certainly made a massive
difference to the Albion when he came on at half time against Burnley.
Without him, we looked clueless and ineffective up front with McCammon
and McPhee unable to win the ball, hold up the play or give any options
for balls to be played into areas that would trouble Burnley's defence.

By this time, Burnley were 1-0 up
through Akinbiye (doesn't he always seem to score against us?) who was
generally being well marshalled by Virgo (except for this one instance
where everyone stood back and watched them score) who was playing in a
three man defence in place of Dolan who had been dropped to the bench.

After half time, when Jake had replaced
Big Mac, the whole team suddenly sparked into life and we looked more
dangerous than we have done in an away match for quite some time.
Looking like a little Michael Owen, Jake ran at their defenders and made
darting runs for balls to played through to him. Although he was caught
offside more times than we would have liked he gave the midfield options
of somewhere different to play the ball, worried their defenders and
opened up more opportunities than we would ever have had without him.

Most of our best play came down the
right where Paul Reid was transformed in the second half and he made the
goal when he got to the bye line for the first time and put in an inch
perfect cross for Dean Hammond to score.

The 1,000 or so travelling fans went
mad and looked forward to more of the same. Reid put the best chance
high and wide of the goal and other opportunities were lost due to a
mixture of over cautiousness or poor finishing. However, whenever Jake
got the ball, we looked like something would happen and he's got to be
playing in our last three games. Whether that's from the start or coming
on as a sub again to completely change our way of playing is up to Mark
McGhee. Let's hope he gets it right.

A draw at home to West Ham and a win at
Rotherham should be enough shouldn't it? Let's hope we can go into the
last game against Ipswich with nothing riding on the result!

"We felt that unless we won we would stay in
the bottom three.
"The important thing was to take
something out of the game. If we win one game, I think we will stay up."
"I had a bit of a rant at half-time at
one or two as we didn't get close enough to them, but we changed to a
4-4-2 and were unlucky not to win." |
