FANS
REPORT: BRIGHTON 1 - 1 CARDIFF, TUE 19 OCT 04
We
have this report from the game:
Let
the game begin... and before you could blink, Leon Knight was having a shot at
the Cardiff goal - it was blocked, but goes to show how determined he is to get
some more goals this season. It wasn't long however before Cardiff got control
of the ball, and were having their go at goal - Chris Barker, Alan Lee, before
Peter Thorne's shot went over the bar.
But
it wasn't to be their night... Leon Knight got the ball back and knocked it into
the bottom right hand side of the goal to get his scoring career back on track
after just 10 minutes.
For
the next 20 minutes, fouls would be committed by members of both teams resulting
in a number of free kicks, mostly ending in open play, however Cardiff were
continually putting on pressure taking shots to try and win one back. Before too
long, Carpenter came on in replacement for Nicolas as he went off injured.
Butters, who has returned from injury, and Hinshelwood made a number of
clearances to ensure Cardiff did not get close enough to have an accurate shot.
With
Cardiff coming closer and closer to scoring, Kuipers made a number of excellent
saves, three within around a minute. It was now looking likely that they would
be sharing the points with us if we couldn't get the ball under control and away
from our end. With seconds to spare until the half time whistle, Joe Ledley
headed the ball and hit the woodwork. Alan Lee tried to rescue the shot, but hit
it over the bar. Luckily, the first half ended 1-0 to us, however we were about
to head into the second half, when Cardiff most often score... If we could hang
on through this first 20 minutes or so, we should be able to hang on until the
end to get the three points we need.
The
second half started just as we left off, with Cardiff calling the shots -
literally! 24 seconds from the whistle, and Kuipers had to save a shot from
Chris Barker. Ledley was not going to miss the chance of having another shot,
and O'Neil had a number of shots cleared by Reid and Carpenter. Just as it
seemed to calm down, Cardiff took advantage with another round of shots, however
they were all taken care of. With this in mind, Currie was taken off and
replaced by Jarrett. All most immediately, Virgo was having a shot at Cardiff,
one of the first from Brighton since the start of the game - and not to be the
last. Jarrett also set Virgo up for another go, before having a go at goal
himself. However, it wasn't to be...
Just
as we were finally learning how to manage the ball effectively against Cardiff,
they got the ball back and were trying desperately to get back any hope of the
points they were so confident of getting, even one would please them - and this
is what they were now trying to salvage.
And
they were not without luck. Substitute Lee Bullock who came on just minutes
earlier got his head onto a deflection. With less than ten minutes to go, the
score was now even at 1-1.
With
both teams now desperate to get the winning goal, the ball was going up and down
the pitch, but not seeing much goal action. A cross from Virgo was cleared, and
Adam Campbell from Cardiff was caught offside. Injury time didn't being any extra
chances, and the
final whistle blew - both teams get one point...
Managers
Reactions:
McGhee
(Brighton)...
The
goal we conceded was very basic.
"The
goalkeeper didn't pick up the lad and it was disappointing, but 1-1 was a fair
result.
"It
was a good team performance to get us a point. It keeps Cardiff behind us, but
to be honest we are punching above our weight.
"We
are under no illusions. Our young players are doing their best and this is a
great achievement by them."
Lennie
Lawrence (Cardiff)...
"We
gave Brighton an early lead but in the first half alone we had enough chances to
win three games.
"It
was a case of two points being lost.
"In
fairness our players kept going and it would have been a real choker had we come
away with nothing."
