WEBMASTERS REPORT: BRIGHTON 2 - 1 GILLINGHAM, 27/12/04

We have this report from the game:

Carpenter and Virgo saved the day after we spent almost fifty minutes 1-0 down. Gillinghams 'Crofts' scored after 34 minutes with a header.

It was not Carpenters first shot of the game, and he had already tried for an equaliser both sides of the break. A pass from Oatway set him up for a long range drive to set the score even.

10 minutes later, Virgo took a shot from six yards, and to everyone's delight, secured the three points. A final tactical substitution by Gillingham had no effect, and we hung on for a win.

Before the game, the Gillingham manager had complained that the pitch was not suitable to play on. McGhee said ""Conditions were a bit tricky, but not that bad. I've played on a lot worse. The pitch was not a concern - it's a state of mind." I am sure if they had got the three points, they would not be complaining!

Managers Reactions (Brighton):

"Conditions were a bit tricky, but not that bad. I've played on a lot worse. The pitch was not a concern - it's a state of mind.

"It was a tremendously satisfying win and means that Gillingham will probably need to win three more games than us from now on to catch us.

"We played with a better tempo in the second-half and deserved our win."

Managers Reactions (Millwall):

"The pitch was unplayable in my view and I told the referee this before the game.

"It's not sour grapes. It takes away the skill factor and makes it dangerous.

"After going ahead I didn't feel we would lose the game. But this was very cruel for the players who did well in the conditions."
