Flying High
Report: (Plymouth 5 - 1 Brighton) |
Plymouth
are now level in points in the league, and one place above us as they
blasted five in the back of the net, four of them in the first half! This
was the worst defeat for the club since we lost against Crystal Palace
back in 2002.
The
game seemed to start okay, but you could see we had no power upfront with
Virgo and McCammon missing.
Plymouth
took an early lead with a well taken finish after the Albion failed to
clear, however Oatway managed to get one back with a scrambled header.
Paul
Wotton, our man to watch out for, missed a penalty in their last game
against Derby however made up for it this weekend in the 13th minute after
Hinshelwood handled the ball. McGhee was not the happiest man, and fumed "I think that some of the refereeing was
shambolic. We have now had three penalty decisions against us in two games and I think that none of them have actually been a penalty."
Many fans have come up with different ideas about this, some saying he was
pushed. Despite this, even if that had happened he shouldn't have handled
the ball.
Soon
enough Wotton was back, after a free kick was given for Shaaban handling
the ball outside the area. It was obvious that this superb strike would be
going straight in the back of the net.
By
the 36th minute, Plymouth had already got four goals and the team from
this point seemed to run around without producing much. Hart went close,
but Plymouths Aljofree put a stop to this.
The
second half didn't see much change, however McPhee fresh on the pitch got
the Plymouth keeper on his toes for a low shot in the 64th minute.
Sadly,
this wasn't the start of things to come. Carpenter, notably one of the
best players on the Brighton side during the match, was sent off for a
shove on Chadwick in frustration for stopping him taking a quick free
kick, the second time during the match. Carpenter will now miss the next
three games, and return for the Tuesday night game against Preston North
End.
The
game wasn't over yet however, and Plymouth wanted to end on a high. The
88th minute saw Scott Taylor score with a short range finish giving McGhee
his biggest defeat as Brighton manager.

"I think we can still play better
but it's always good to see the ball hit the back of the net.
"I think we have been knocking on
the door for a long time and we managed to get the five goals today
"It does do our goal difference a
world of good."

"We should have had a free-kick for
their player pushing Adam Hinshelwood as he went to clear, but they were
awarded a penalty.
"The same linesman gave the decision
against Rami Shaaban when he's supposed to have gone out of his area with
the ball although I wasn't in line with it."

Talk
about sour grapes! Blimey McGee needs to lighten up a bit! While I will
agree with him that we were fortunate to get the penalty as I thought
Hinshelwood was pushed when he handled, he can't complain about the rest
of the game. We were well on top all game and it could have been more than
five in the end, except we took our foot off the gas to save ourselves for
Tuesday. Even so, we still had the better chances after the break.
