STOCKPORT
1 - 0 BRIGHTON
Match Report from the game
Our
away form has not been anywhere near good enough if we want to stay at the top
end of the table. After not winning an away game since November, now is the time
for the players to show us what they have...
The
game started well, with an early chance in the second minute from a corner taken
by Richard Carpenter, but the goal keeper had it under control and cleared it.
However, Stockport soon had their own chance just a minute later, but luckily
Roberts was also alert. By 10 minutes it was starting to look as though they
would score, when their player, Robertson, just missed from 20 yards. Things
didn't change much as the game progressed through the first half, and Roberts
had to make a save in the 22nd minute when Danny Griffin tried to make the score
1-0. Less than 10 minutes later, it was Robert Clare's turn with a volley from
the right side of the penalty area. Luckily it missed, but would we be able to
gain control of the ball long enough to have another shot our selves.
Luckily,
we got a corner but it was cleared by their goalie, only to end up at our end in
the same circumstances for Stockport. The game was getting close, with another
round of shots each and cleared by Danny Cullip. However, our luck was about to
run out in the 40th minute when Fraser McLachlan headed the ball in to the net
from the centre of the penalty area after a cross by Danny Jackman to make it
1-0 to Stockport. We fought back but they still managed to get the ball from us.
As the seconds counted down for half time, Trevor Benjamin tried his luck at
goal also with a header after a free kick, but their keeper managed to stop it
from going in. Half time score, Stockport 1, Brighton 0.
The
second half started with Trevor Benjamin being taken off shortly after taking a
shot which their goal keeper caught. With both Benjamin and Knight out of play,
would one of the others be able to go forward and get us one back? On 51
minutes, Nathan Jones took our corner and Adam Virgo headed it straight into the
bottom right of the goal - its Stockport 1 - 1 Brighton. As the game continued,
we had control over the ball and looked like the better team. A header from
Nathan Jones in the 62nd minute was saved by Stockport, but we kept piling on
the pressure. This didn't stop them from having another go with a shot from
Richard Lambert going over the bar. Stockport clearly wanted all three points
and were not going to let us get away with a win.
The
shots were coming in thick and fast first with Richard Carpenter putting the
ball over the bar, and then Stockport having a shot just outside the penalty
area. We got the ball back, and it was Nathan Jones' turn to have a shot but it
was saved. Robinson was next up from 18 yards, but we couldn't get it in.
The
end of the game was drawing closer, and a draw would be better than losing, even
if we do only get one point. A shot by Stuart Barlow in the 88th minute went
over the bar, and David Lee also taking his chances but missing. It was the 90th
minute and it looked like it was all over... the whistle blows - its is now.
Stockport County 1 - 1 Brighton & Hove Albion.
