WYCOMBE
1 - 2 BRIGHTON, WEBMASTERS REPORT
Match Report from the game
After
all the news about Falmer in the last couple of days, this was going to be a day
not just for the players to show what they can do on the pitch, but for the fans
to show what they can do off the pitch in support for Falmer.
The
game kicked off at 3pm, and almost straight away we had a chance at goal after
Nethercott from Wycombe made a foul on Trevor Benjamin. The free kick was taken
by Leon Knight, and Benjamin almost got it in, but it just went wide. After
giving away a number of throw ins and free kicks, it looked like Wycombe might
go one ahead. Luckily, the shot by Simpson went over.
25
minutes after the game started, Gary Hart gave away a free kick for a hand ball
outside the area. Scott Marshall took the free kick, but we soon had it back
under control. Before long, it was our turn for a free kick, taken by Carpenter
for a foul on Oatway. This didn't make any difference to the score, and the ball
was back in play. On 33 minutes, we got a corner. It was taken by Paul Watson
and passed across to Trevor Benjamin who had a shot - Its on target... 1-0 to
the Albion. In the next 10 minutes we were to give away 3 free kicks to Wycombe,
luckily they didn't manage to score from any of them, with the last one, a shot
by Darren Currie going wide. If we didn't get the ball under control soon, they
would take their chances and score.
The
fans were singing and waving their 'Falmer gear' around throughout the game so
far, but it wasn't enough to keep Wycombe from scoring. In the last minute of
the first half, Nathan Tyson was fouled by Guy Butters, and a free kick awarded.
Tyson soon got his revenge and had a shot, to make the score 1-1, even though it
should have been called offside. This wasn't the end of the first half though,
and a foul on Danny Cullip almost lead to Wycombe gaining another goal. Ben
Roberts took the free kick but Wycombe soon got it under control and had a shot,
luckily Roberts was able to catch it, to end the first half in a draw.
This
wasn't to dampen the Albion fans spirits however, and they continued to sing as
we went into the second half. As the second half was starting, there was more
bad news to come. Ben Roberts was injured, and couldn't play for the second
half, which means that our new keeper, Stuart Jones was to take his place.
Wycombe were straight onto the ball, but luckily our defence managed to clear
their corner before they got to make anything from it. However, they would not
give up easily, and Tyson, who scored the earlier goal was coming back for his
second of the game. Luckily, on 48 minutes, it hit the woodwork and the game
stayed 1-1. Unless we got our act together, we would be 2-1 down in a matter of
minutes.
10
minutes into the second half, and neither team could gain control of the ball.
We need to win this game to make sure we stay near the top of the table, at
least in the play off positions, but Wycombe desperately need points to avoid
relegation. It was going to be a tough battle until the end of the game.
Luckily, after a foul on Kerry Mayo, we were able to get control, even after
Currie tried his luck at another free kick.
The
singing was starting to quiet down a little as Wycombe continued to build up
their confidence and keep going for goal. On 57 minutes, Leon Knight had his
first proper chance of the game to score, but the Wycombe keeper stopped it. We
were starting to get the game back, with another shot on 61 minutes, this time
by Gary Hart, but it went wide. Knight wasn't going to give up either, and also
took another shot just a minute later, but yet again, the Wycombe keeper stopped
it from going in. They soon turned it around, with Currie, determined as ever,
trying to get another goal for the team, but it also went wide.
On 74
minutes, Wycombe were to have another close shave, with a ball from Simpson once
again hitting the bar. We soon had two free kicks awarded, but still couldn't
make anything happen. It was looking very much like the game would end on a
draw, with both teams receiving only one point.
It
was becoming a very close game in the last couple of minutes, with a number of
crosses by Danny Senda for Wycombe, but luckily we managed to clear them all
before they ended up in the back of the net. As the game came to a close, we
never really had any good chance to score, and the referee, A Kaye, blew for
full time.
And
so the 20 minute site in began by the fans to support Falmer, with the vast
majority of supporters supporting the action...
