All
Things Brighton Beautiful CD: You've heard of the perfect music for cruising in
your car in the summer time with the windows wound down and the stereo cranked
up loud? Well, this is the perfect accompaniment for those long away trips to
the likes of Oldham and Hartlepool on those cold and dark winter afternoons
and evenings. Put it on the Car CD player, sing along to lots of your terrace
classics set to a funky beat plus a number of other original songs, and get
yourself in the mood for the game ahead.
Starting with "Albion Oh Albion", it
progresses to the best track which is that fantasy that most of us have
probably thought about ever since 1983 "And Smith Just Scored" - if
only! "Seagulls Anthem" includes a modern version of Sussex by the
Sea and the "Ode to Leon Knight" is exactly that with many
variations of the he shot, he scored song plus his own version of Wimoweh. A
new version of the 1983 Cup Final song "The Boys in the Old Brighton
Blue" (changed here to the boys in the old white and blue) makes me
wonder whoever bought the original - and why! "We're with the
Albion" is set to punky fuzz guitar and is followed by "Jimmy's
White Shoes", all about Jimmy Melia and the 1983 Cup Final of course.
There follows a list of 101 Brighton Legends and Famous Players split into
three parts which is interesting to listen to once and be surprised how few
goals certain players scored or how many appearances others did actually make
despite their lack of class (no doubt you will all have your own opinions
about this!). However, you'd skip over this every other time you played the
CD. There are a few strange choices though - Frank Stapleton & Russell
Osman hardly count as Legends while Stuart Storer is excluded. Kerry Mayo is
also classified as a midfield player - some would say he's not even a left
back! In between these three parts is "Blue & White Barmy Army"
which includes the Chris McPhee / Christmas Tree song and a number of other
variations on terrace chants (guess which!) and, finally, "We Love you
Brighton" which is another variation on all of your favourite Albion
songs.
All in all, it's a fun CD which may date a little
in the future once a lot of the current players have moved on but with plenty
of references to the 1983 Cup Final, the Goldstone Ground and many players
from the past there's plenty for everyone to enjoy. Keep it in the car and dig
it out every time you're heading north and looking forward to an away win.
