Worried you might forget something? Or maybe there's something you haven't thought of? Check out comprehensive list of items below to ensure you have everything you need (and want!)...

What you will have:

When you move into St Pats you will be faced with an empty room just like the one above - however, you will have many essential items already in the room. Before you move anything in, you will have:

  • Bed
  • Sink
  • Cupboard with shelves
  • Desk with cupboard and/or shelves
  • Swivel Chair
  • Bedside table
  • Comfy chair
  • 2/3 shelves
  • Lamp
  • Broadband access point
  • Broadband ethernet cable
  • Curtains
  • Wall light
  • Shaving light
  • Bin

What you will need:

From the start of the 2006 academic year, there will be no cleaners except those who will clean communial areas such as the shared kitchens and bathrooms. Therefore you will be expected to clean your own room and provide your own bed sheets.

On Saturday and Sunday night you are expected to provide your own meals. While something like a pizza might be easy to cook and saves on the washing up, you'll soon get bored of it week after week! Therefore, bring some pots, pans, cutlery, plates, cups and glasses as well as soom food. This can be stored in your own personal cupboard in the kitchen.

Don't forget a bag to carry your work, maybe some folders to organise your work, as well as pens and pencils and other equipment such as calculators depending on what course you are studying!

What you might like:

Everyone has different tastes and will want to arrange your rooms differently. Here are some things that are common in student accommodation:

  • Computer or Laptop
  • Plants
  • Stereo
  • TV
  • DVD's
  • Photos
  • Posters
  • Clock
  • Books
  • Printer

In the first couple of weeks there are poster fairs on campus. You are not supposed to stick anything to your walls, however everyone does! As long as it doesn't peel off the wall paper you should be fine. You are not allowed to stick posters to doors or walls in the corridors as this is apparently a fire hazard. They will be removed!

If you have a TV in your room you must get a TV license. In the 2005/2006 academic year the TV licensing people did come round the hall, however this was mainly to distribute leaflets and postit notes to remind you to get your TV license. Even if you have a TV card on your computer or laptop, you need a license. You can claim back the money for unused months, for example July - October once you have left.

Many people brought a fridge with them in the 2005/2006 academic year however these are banned, along with things like kettles and toasters in rooms. A shared fridge is available in each corridors kitchen to store items, along with

Depending on where you room is will depend on which bathroom you have to use. In some cases this might be quite a walk down to the ground floor. Especially in the winter months, you might find a dressing gown a welcome addition on the walk. As time goes on however most people will simply be walking between the showers in their towels!

If you can thing of anything else that you would recommend to people to bring, post it below...

For the walk to the shower, as well as a dressing gown, flip flops might come in handy.

This is a great site, I'm a returning student and I can't think of anything you've missed. The university should have a link to this site from the accomodation page if there isn't already one.
